After making your own hot chocolate mix you will never again buy hot chocolate mix from the grocery store. Making your own is dead simple and a basic hot chocolate mix only requires 2 ingredients. This oreo hot chocolate has 3 ingredients. I know, so complicated!
You may have spent quite a bit of time looking at the ingredient lists of hot chocolate mix trying to find an accidently vegan product but the secret no one tells you is hot chocolate mix is only cocoa powder and sugar… That’s it!
Mix cocoa powder and sugar in an airtight container, place it in your cabinet, and you’re done. You just save a bunch of money on hot cocoa mix. The best part is you get to experiment and come up with your own hot chocolate flavor like this oreo hot chocolate.
Do you know what the secret ingredient to making this dark black chocolate hot cocoa is? No, it is not ground up oreo cookies.
The secret ingredient: Black Cocoa Powder
Natural Cocoa Powder, Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder, Black Cocoa Powder. What’s the difference?
Natural cocoa powder is the least processed cocoa powder and is also the lightest colored cocoa powder. It is highly acidic and has a strong rich chocolate flavor. If you want a strong chocolate flavor, use natural cocoa powder.
Dutch processed cocoa powder or alkalized cocoa powder is a cocoa powder that has been processed to remove some of the acidity. It has a darker color than natural cocoa powder but a more muted chocolate taste. Most people see the darker color and they think darker flavor because of dark chocolate but that is just not true!
Black Cocoa Powder is highly alkalized cocoa powder. As you would expect while it has the darkest color it also has the most muted flavor. Mostly you see black cocoa powder added for coloring and mixed with another cocoa powder to increase the chocolate flavor.
That is how I used black cocoa powder in this recipe for oreo hot chocolate. I used half natural cocoa powder for a strong chocolate flavor and half black cocoa powder to give it that rich oreo color.
Feel free to play with the ratio of sweetener and cocoa powders to get the flavor you want, but I found equal parts natural cocoa powder, black cocoa powder and white sugar to be the perfect mix.
- ½ cup black cocoa powder
- ½ cup natural cocoa powder
- ½ cup white sugar
- 1 - 2 tbsp oreo hot cocoa mix
- 1 cup plant milk
- To make the cocoa mix, combine the black cocoa powder, natural cocoa powder, and sugar. Store in an airtight container.
